Shipping & Transport

After several months of raising and nurturing the goldfish, they become ready for the next stage of their life, shipping to our distributors.

Packing fish for shipment
The amount of fish packed per box varies according to size. The feeder goldfish are packed 1000 per box, while some of the largest koi may only be packed two to three per box. The most efficient method of packing the feeder goldfish is to pack them according to weight. To do this, several samples are hand counted and weighed.
This sample weight is recorded, and from that point, the fish are weighed and packed accordingly. However, all of the fancy varieties are hand counted. Each box is packed with approximately 3% extra fish to offset any transit losses.

Once counted or weighed, the fish are placed in specially designed boxes. This consists of a heavy plastic bag inserted in a corrugated box that has been fitted with a wax-coated liner. This specially coated liner helps in the event of any leaks that could possibly occur.  A special water

Shipping Boxes
dispenser puts a pre-measured amount of fresh water into each of these box. Next, an ice pack is added to each box to help maintain a constant temperature. Prior to sealing each box, they are inspected to make certain the fish are of the quality that we have built our reputation on. Finally, the bags are purged of any excess air, then filled with pure oxygen, twisted tightly closed and sealed with a rubber band. The boxes are then closed, taped shut and stacked according to their destinations. It is difficult to convey a picture of just how hectic the packing room can be. As many as a dozen orders or more can be on the board at any one time, with 20 or more people getting the fish ready.

Delivery Trucks
Once packed, the fish are loaded on our trucks to be delivered to local distributors, or taken to one of four major airports: Baltimore/Washington International (BWI), Washington Dulles International (IAD),
Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) or Philadelphia International (PHL). Each of these airports is a minimum 2-hour drive from our location. Our primary shipping days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, but as always, we are willing to work with customers who might have special needs. The next time you fly, there is a good chance that Mt. Parnell Goldfish are flying with you!
